Language Lessons Movie Review
Little about Language Lessons sounded appealing to me--shot entirely over webcam with only two actors, talking about life--and yet it taught me a serious lesson: don’t underestimate fantastic chemistry and a powerful screenplay.
Starring Natalie Morales and Jay Duplass, the movie is about a man and his virtual Spanish teacher who bond over a series of weeks and months, despite never having met in person. Though their conversations are often flighty and entertaining, they are drawn to each other by tragedy and personal demons.
Funny, amusing, and engaging, while simultaneously weighty and moving, Language Lessons is a surprisingly effective comedy-drama that thrives on the chemistry between its two stars, who also co-wrote the movie (Morales directed). Its premise might be slight, but it defies its seeming limitations at every turn.
